Chorea footwear

Components
01
Flared base
A low sole with a wider edge.
Model and sources
Geometry model
02These calculations do not predict falls or shoe safety.
Reference base
95 mm wide
Model margin
Concept base
mm wide
Model margin
Negative values do not predict a fall; positive values do not establish safety.
At centered position, zero-crossings: 14.9 cm/s reference, 18.0 cm/s concept.
Equations and assumptions
omega = sqrt(g / h)XCoM = x + v / omegamargin = base_width / 2 - XCoM
g = 9.81 m/s². x = 0. h is the assumed center-of-mass height. v is sideways velocity in m/s. XCoM combines position and velocity.
The model assumes a rigid base with full ground contact. It excludes steps, turns and material deformation. Dimensions are not fitting advice.
Trade-off assumptions
These coefficients are assumed, not measured. They cannot determine a safe width.
benefit = 0.10 × flarecost = 0.0016 × weight × flare²
At the selected flare: arbitrary units.
Changing the invented penalty changes the answer. No setting is a recommendation.

Position and velocity define a model boundary. This is not a footwear test.
HD gait study
Seven participants with HD and seven controls. The study did not test footwear.
